Weekly Update
This week, while the Prime Minister is in Samoa discussing shared opportunities within the Commonwealth and how we can work together to drive economic growth, the Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner MP stepped in for Prime Minister’s Questions.
In the Commons, the Deputy Prime Minister made it clear to the Conservatives what they didn’t want to hear: this Labour Government was elected to end the chaos left behind after 14 years of Tory mismanagement, and that is exactly what we are doing. We are pro-business, pro-worker, and determined to clean up the mess they left.
An example of this is the new Employment Bill that will raise the living standards of 10 million workers. While their so-called leadership candidates argue about what went wrong, this Labour Government is getting on with rebuilding Britain.
Part of our rebuilding effort includes strengthening our national security and deepening cooperation with our allies. This week, we signed a landmark defence agreement with Germany—an agreement that not only enhances our safety but also creates hundreds of jobs here in the UK.
Change NHS: a health service fit for the future:
If you rely on, work in, or care about our NHS – I am asking you to take a few minutes of your time to contribute to our new Government's 10 Year Health Plan to help build a health service fit for the future.
The NHS is broken, but not beaten, and the Government has made it their mission to fix it. Whether you use the NHS or work in it, you see first-hand what’s great, but also what isn’t working. That’s why, this week, the biggest conversation about the future of the NHS since its founding in 1948 has been launched – and I’m asking residents in Enfield North to have their say.
It only takes a few minutes to share your views. Just visit http://www.change.nhs.uk or open up your NHS app for the chance to have your say. The platform will be live for five months and there is an option to print off forms and send them back by post if you prefer to work offline.
It is absolutely vital that residents in Enfield North share their ideas for the future of our NHS, and make sure our voice is heard.
Ark John Keats School Visit:
Great to join pupils at Ark John Keats school today to talk about citizenship and British values.
They are a credit to their school and showed a real passion for their local community and the discussion.
I can’t wait to come back again soon!
Enfield Fire Station visit:
It was great to visit our local fire station in Enfield North today to discuss the work of our emergency services and the risks within our area from the fire and rescue service perspective.
The London Fire Brigade is one of the busiest fire and rescue services in the world. They receive around 200,000 emergency calls per year and respond to over 16,000 fires, as well as a range of other incidents including road traffic collisions, flooding, wildfires and terror-related incidents.
They also have among the best response times in the world, meaning that Londoners can expect firefighters to be in attendance within six minutes of them making an emergency call.
I have immense respect for the dedication and bravery of our fire and rescue service workers, and today’s visit was a valuable opportunity to learn more about the vital role they play in keeping our community safe.
Labour’s plan to end the Tory sewage crisis:
After 14 years of neglect under the Conservatives, Britain's rivers, lakes and seas are in an unacceptably poor state, as many of you in Enfield North know all too well.
Our rivers are choked with pollution—Thames Water alone discharged raw sewage into the River Lea for over 1,100 hours in 2019.
The previous Government’s failure to upgrade our water infrastructure has held the country back, halting investment and the building of homes for the future. Worse, in just 15 years, demand for water will outstrip supply.
That is why on Wednesday, the Government launched the Independent Water Commission, the largest review of the sector since privatisation.
The commission will report back next year with recommendations to the Government on tackling inherited systemic issues in the water sector to restore our rivers, lakes, and seas to good health, meet the challenges of the future and drive economic growth.
The recommendations will form the basis of further legislation to attract long-term investment and clean up our waters for good – injecting billions of pounds into the economy, speeding up delivery on infrastructure to support house building and addressing water scarcity.
Once again, Labour is taking urgent action to clean up the mess left by the Tories and deliver for the country.
Ayley Croft Community Association Walkabout:
Great to meet residents from the Ayley Croft Community Association for a walkabout last week to discuss anti-social behaviour and other important issues in our area.
I look forward to continuing to work with them!
Employment Rights’ Bill:
Labour is getting to work on driving up standards for millions of workers with our plan to make work pay.
On Monday, I was proud to vote to:
· End exploitative zero-hour contracts.
· Strengthen sick pay.
· Protect against unfair dismissal from day one.
The bill will update the UK’s outdated employment laws and turn the page on an economy blighted by insecurity, poor productivity and low pay. We are raising the floor on workplace rights to deliver a stronger, fairer and brighter future for the world of work in the UK.
