Weekly Update

On Monday, the Prime Minister joined Emmanuel Macron in Paris for the French Armistice Day service with British and French veterans. He is the first UK leader to attend France’s national commemoration event since Winston Churchill in 1944.

On Tuesday, the Prime Minister was at COP in Baku to announce a new climate target for the UK - to reduce the country's emissions by 81% by 2035 against 1990 levels. He also announced a £1bn investment in a wind turbine project in Hull, which he said would create 1,300 local jobs.

This government recognises that the world stands at a critical juncture in the climate crisis, and the United Kingdom not only has a critical role to play but also an opportunity to grasp.

In the first 100 days of this government, we scrapped the ban on onshore wind, committed to no new North Sea oil and gas licenses, and began to renew those North Sea communities, with a programme of investment in the jobs and industries of the future.

We closed the UK’s final coal power plant at the end of September - becoming the very first G7 economy to phase out coal power. And at the same time, we are on a mission to achieve clean power by 2030.

We launched Great British Energy, a clean British Energy company, to improve our energy resilience and bring down people’s bills. And create the next generation of good, well-paid jobs.

We set up the National Wealth Fund, to invest in tomorrow’s key industries. To build the infrastructure – the wind farms, solar farms, the grid infrastructure that will power and connect our country for decades to come.

With this government, the UK will lead the way on climate on the global stage.

Cash Access UK

It was great to pop down to the Cash Access UK drop-in to speak about the banking hub I won for Enfield North.

A banking hub is a shared banking space, like a traditional bank branch but available to everyone. They offer face-to-face cash and banking services.

I know this will be welcomed by residents and local businesses, which have struggled to access cash since several high-street banks closed.

The temporary hub will open on Monday while we find a permanent space for the banking hub. I can’t wait to visit and finally see the doors open!

Find out more about banking hubs here.

Mayor of London Visit

On Wednesday it was great to welcome the Mayor of London to Enfield as he announced a major funding boost for mentors in pupil referral units.

We visited Orchardside School and met some of the mentors and students that this fund benefits, as well as the amazing work they do.

The mentoring is a critical way to tackle violence and reduce incidents in schools, as well as improve the well-being of young people.

The Mayor announced:

  • Violence Reduction Unit (VRU) invests £2.3 million to expand mentoring in pupil referral unit

  • Support for mentoring is a critical element of the Mayor’s approach to tackling violence

  • New funding means the mentoring programme will feature in schools in all 32 London boroughs for the first time

  • Builds on pupil referral units (PRUs) and alternative provisions reporting that mentoring has supported improved attendance and reduced incidents

Remembrance Day in Enfield

I was honoured to attend Remembrance Sunday in Enfield North on Sunday and lay a wreath in memory of all who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Remembrance unites the nation to honour those who have served to protect our freedoms, not only in the World Wars but in all conflicts since. I had the opportunity to pay my respects at Parliament’s Constituency Garden of Remembrance on behalf of the constituents of Enfield North the week prior.

I honour all those who gave their service and made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
