Weekly Update

Another week, another step forward for Britain under Labour’s leadership. We are delivering real change where the Tories failed for over a decade—driving growth, unlocking opportunity, and making government work for the people.

Apprenticeships: Powering Growth & Opportunity

This week marks Apprenticeships Week, and under Labour, we are transforming the system to equip young people and businesses with the skills they need to thrive.

Keir Starmer has put apprenticeships at the heart of Labour’s education revolution:

●     Skills England: Our first education bill, now progressing through Parliament, will establish a national skills body to drive forward training that works for the modern economy.

●     New Foundation Apprenticeships: We are rebalancing funding to ensure young people—not just big firms—benefit.

●     Homebuilding Skills Hubs: Fast-tracking training for apprentices to build more homes and jumpstart economic growth.

●     Youth Guarantee: Every young person will be in education, training, or employment—no one left behind.

The first apprenticeship figures under this Labour government show increases in starts, participation, and completions compared to 2023—a clear sign that we are reversing years of Conservative neglect. And we’re not stopping:

●     Shorter apprenticeships to boost flexibility for businesses and accelerate skills training.

●     Reforming English & Maths requirements, opening doors for up to 10,000 more young people.

●     Slashing Tory red tape, letting providers focus on training, not bureaucracy.

●     A new digital Apprenticeship App to modernize the journey for apprentices.

●     Expanding apprenticeships in key sectors, including education and green energy.

Let’s be clear, under the Conservatives, apprenticeship starts collapsed, businesses were left stranded, and young people suffered. Labour is fixing this mess—delivering skills, jobs, and growth.

Fixing the Housing Crisis the Tories Ignored

The dream of homeownership and the security of a safe home should not be out of reach. Yet for too long, Conservative policies have left families struggling on waiting lists, with sky-high rents and too few homes being built. Our borough of Enfield is one those that has felt this more so than others. But, Labour is taking decisive action:

●     We will build 1.5 million homes to boost supply and drive down costs.

●     A fresh £350m funding boost will build thousands more affordable and social homes, on top of the £500m we committed in last year’s Budget.

●     Getting families off waiting lists and into secure homes—because housing is a right, not a privilege.

The Tories talked. Labour is delivering.

Backing Innovation & Digital Reform

On Wednesday, the Data Bill had its Second Reading in Parliament—an important step in Labour’s plan to harness the power of data for public good. This bill will:

●     Cut 1.5 million hours of police time and 140,000 NHS staff hours annually—meaning more time spent solving crimes and saving lives.

●     Improve public services by modernising digital government, making it faster and more efficient.

●     Enhance online safety, giving coroners the power to prevent social media companies from deleting key data in cases involving young people.

Labour is building a modern digital government—one that serves citizens, not itself.

Engaging Locally: Listening & Leading

●     George Spicer Primary Visit: I was delighted to welcome young ambassadors from George Spicer Primary to Parliament, showing them democracy in action.

●     Coffee Morning in Chase Side: It was fantastic to speak with constituents over coffee, addressing local concerns and casework issues. If you’d like to join my next event, keep an eye on my social media.

●     Meeting with Enfield Council: I met with council officials to discuss key local issues. I remain committed to working with local leaders to drive positive change for our community.

Representing Britain on the World Stage

Ahead of the AI Action Summit in Paris, I joined international leaders to discuss how Labour is making AI a force for public good. Britain is leading the charge in responsible AI—fueling innovation while protecting workers and public services.
