Weekly Update
Another week, another series of decisive steps forward under Labour’s Plan for Change. After 14 years of Conservative failure, we are getting Britain back on track.
On Monday, the government will shared news on defence manufacturing jobs across the UK. On Tuesday, the Deputy Prime Minister lead the news around our neighbourhood plans to generate pride in our towns and cities. On Wednesday, the Ministry of Justice announced the forward allocation of court sitting days. On Thursday, a key UK-Ireland summit was held in Liverpool, looking at closer collaboration with our nearest international neighbour. On Friday, the Health Secretary launched a new supervised toothbrushing scheme for three to five year olds, targeting the areas of highest need.
Defence
I know we have all had eyes on the ongoing situation in Ukraine this week. We are facing a once-in-a-generation moment for the collective security of our country and our continent.
Labour’s support for Ukraine is ironclad, and we are committed to standing with Ukraine for as long as it takes.
I have been immensely proud of the Prime Minister this week. We are stepping up UK leadership on Ukraine throughout 2025
In 2025, UK spending on military support for Ukraine will be its highest level ever. This year we are providing £4.5b in military support to Ukraine.
This Government will ensure defence is an engine for driving economic growth in every corner of the UK.
International Women’s Day
For too long, Conservative governments have let women down. Under their watch, too many women have faced insecurity—whether in their homes, workplaces, or communities. Labour is putting women at the centre of our missions: tackling violence against women and girls, driving economic growth, fixing the NHS, and tearing down the barriers to opportunity.
This is about more than words—it’s about action. Through our Plan for Change, we are delivering the policies needed to make gender equality a reality, marking the beginning of a decade of national renewal with women at its heart.
Reminder
I’m hosting my annual International Women’s Day reception on Monday (10th March) in Parliament to celebrate the inspiring women of Enfield North. If you’d like to join, please email Beatrice.morrison@parliament.uk.
Rail Accountability
For years, the Conservatives turned a blind eye while passengers endured unreliable services, endless cancellations, and soaring fares. Labour is putting an end to this dysfunctionality. This week marks the start of a new era of rail accountability.
For the first time, performance data is available at over 1,700 stations—including Brimsdown, Crews Hill, Enfield Chase, Enfield Lock, Gordon Hill, and Ponders End—exposing years of Tory mismanagement. Labour is putting passengers first, rebuilding trust, and using connectivity to drive economic growth.
Visit to Northern Ireland
As Minister for AI and Digital Government, I was proud to visit Northern Ireland during National Careers Week, meeting the brilliant winners of last year’s Cyber Explorers Cup. Investing in digital skills is essential to securing Britain’s future and giving young people the opportunities they deserve. Schools interested in this year’s competition can find details here.
I met with Queens University and Cyber businesses to hold a roundtable that contribute to the cyber ecosystem in Belfast.
Opening of West Lea School's post-16 centre for learners with SEND
One of the greatest privileges of being an MP is meeting young people and seeing the difference that real investment in education makes.
This week I was able to visit West Lea School to open their Horizon Campus College in Ponders End.
It is a vital addition to Enfield’s SEND provision that will empower young people with the skills, confidence, and opportunities they deserve.
This centre will create invaluable opportunities for young people in Enfield North, and across the Borough.
I look forward to seeing the lasting impact this new facility will have on our community.
SME4Labour Lunch
This week I had the pleasure of attending SME4Labour’s annual lunch. It was great to meet and speak to SMEs. Labour is a proud pro-business and pro-worker party. We want to make Britain the best place in the world to start and grow a business.
Enfield Playing Fields
I promised to take action on safety concerns around Donkey Lane and Enfield Playing Fields—and that’s exactly what I’m doing. After meeting with the Board of Enfield Town FC, we’re pushing for urgent improvements, including better lighting, more police patrols, and stronger enforcement action.
We’re organising a walkabout with the police to ensure residents feel safe in their own community. If you have concerns, please reach out—I will keep you updated every step of the way.
Ending the Broken Leasehold System
For too many leaseholders, homeownership has become a nightmare—trapped by skyrocketing fees, unfair service charges, and restrictive contracts. The feudal leasehold system is broken, and Labour is ending it.
This week, we published our Commonhold White Paper—a major step towards making commonhold the default tenure, giving leaseholders real rights and protections. Unlike the Tories, who have dragged their feet for years, Labour is taking action to fix this scandal once and for all.
Labour is serious about rebuilding Britain. The Tories left our country weakened, divided, and struggling. We are delivering real change—backing working people, securing our future, and putting power back where it belongs: in the hands of the British people.
